With the corners of the wooden guides knocked off, I then applied 3 more layers of 2 oz. fiberglass mat. The resin that I use is considered FDA food grade when it is in a hardened state. It is the highest quality polyester tooling resin that I can buy. Many food industry companies use it to make food trays and durable kitchen counter tops.

I applied an edge to the roof so that it will maintain its shape after removing it from the curved form tomorrow.

Putty madness has begun! I have applied only one layer to the nose section. Tomorrow I’ll use a air powered hack saw to separate the sculpture from its curved support. This will allow me to place the sculpture on the table and more easily apply additional layers of putty to do the detail work more effectively. The rounded support will have mold release applied to it for easy separation and will continue to be used as a guide to maintain the curve.

I began to free the sculpture from the form using an air powered hack saw... then switched to my trusty Sawz-All.

This top view was taken just prior to releasing some screws that held the pattern in place.

I’m free, I’m free! This will make it easier to move the pattern around to do detail work. I used a grinder to quickly knock off resin drippings from the curved form.

I sealed the curved form with resin so that it will release well. Mold release will be put on prior to using it for detailing the pattern’s edge with putty. The pattern now has putty work underway. Much more puttying and sanding to follow!

Now that the holidays are behind us it’s time to get back at it. The finishing of the surface has begun! I use a auto polishing machine for higher speed & lower torque.

Next, I’ll be locating the high and low spots to determine fill areas.

It’s fun to start putting the pieces next to each other to get a sense of the scale. This is really going to be fun to drive around town!

I will make a narrow version and offer it as a Do-It-Yourself tail fairing kit for recumbent racer enthusiasts. I’ll leave it long to facilitate custom trimming. I know that my buddy Justin is already waiting for one!

After weeks of riding the motorized trike around town, I will greatly appreciate having the roof overhead. An hour across town without shade can get toasty. The roof should also reduce the chances of skin damage. The practicality of this design will allow riders to travel in greater comfort.

Cup-holder anyone? Stereo? You bet!

While I have not loaded current photos in the last few days, I have been constantly refining the fairing’s surface. I have also begun the construction of the rear fairing that I will make available to those seeking rear fairings for their recumbent bicyles and tricycles.

300-900 visitors per day follow the progress of the GoblinAero’s development. Almost as many are following the development of the RAMPAGE velomobile. Thank you for your enthusiasm.
